Its design and the foundations date back from the Inca era, and is the only place where people have lived continuously since the Inca period until the present day.  Above the village stands a fortress and temple area which kept control of and managed this lower part of the valley. Overnight in Ollantaytambo.

Day 4. Aguas Calientes & Machu Picchu

After breakfast we walk to the close-by train station in Ollantaytambo and will then embark on an absolutely stunning voyage along the Urubamba river and with tall mountains surrounding us – some covered in glaciers. We arrive at Aguas Calientes after some 1h40 minutes and will after a small walk in this beautifully situated tourist village go by bus to Machu Picchu. At the entrance we have a short walk to the stairs that will take us to the famous view over Machu Picchu. After that, we can do a small walk in the area or simply do the thorough “city tour” of Machu Picchu, visiting most of its temples and areas.
